Let’s say you want to create one of those effects you see in a magazine where they have a single item in color and the entire background in black and white. Below I’ll show some eye popping color focus to some flowers where you have a totally black and white background. How do you accomplish this with Pixelmator pro? Actually quite simple.
Step 1. – Select the focus color area.
You can press ‘q’ for the [Quick Select] tool to select the object you want to remain in color.
As you select with this tool use keyboard shortcut ‘[‘ or ‘]’ to change the size of the quick select area.
Modify selection with [shift] to add more, and the [option] key to subtract from your selection.
Step Alternative – you can select with a color range if that is easier. See menu [Edit]->[Select Color Range].
Step 2. – Copy and paste the colored selection region to a new layer. You have 2 layers now. This new layer is going to remain untouched. Most of new layer should be transparent.
Step 3. – on the background original layer you want to apply a b/w effect from the Effects options. This will turn the whole layer black and white. Since you have 2 layers – the color layer that remains in front is visible. Follow these simple steps:
Press ‘f’ for a shortcut to the Effects tool
Click [Add Effect]
In the search box type “Color Controls”
Now move the Saturation slider to 0%
There you have it! Add a text layer with some colored text. Very cool result
